How Angry Mob Set Two Revenue Collectors Ablaze in Anambra Over Bystander’s Death
An angry mob in Onitsha, Anambra State, set two revenue collectors ablaze after a tipper driver, allegedly fleeing from the collectors, lost control of his vehicle and killed a bystander. The incident occurred on Venn Road near Egerton Bus Stop, plunging the area into chaos.
According to eyewitnesses, six revenue collectors reportedly pursued the tipper driver, demanding payment. In their bid to stop the driver, some of the collectors allegedly began dragging the vehicle’s steering wheel. This caused the driver to lose control, fatally hitting a passerby.
Upon witnessing the tragedy, enraged residents turned on the revenue collectors. Two of them were set ablaze, while four others managed to escape.
A local witness shared, “This is not the first time such incidents have happened. The reckless actions of these revenue collectors have caused unnecessary deaths in the past. The individual killed was a well-known member of the community, and people have had enough of this negligence.”
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident, with the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stating that authorities are investigating the matter.
“Anambra Police responded swiftly after receiving reports of the fatal accident. We are collaborating with relevant authorities to determine what happened and to prevent such incidents in the future,” SP Ikenga said.
