[Opinion] THE HYPOCRISY OF GOVERNOR UGWUANYI’S ALLELUIA PRAISE SINGERS 

In 2018, I was one of the aspirants who bought the Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms, under the PDP, for the position of State House of Assembly in Enugu State. The intention was to slug it out at the primaries with other aspirants and let the best man win. 

We never got the chance to test our mettle and political sagacity on the field.

A BACKGROUND INFORMATION. 

In 2017, the then House of Assembly member representing Awgu North State Constituency, Hon SKE Udeh Okoye, was made the PDP National Youth Leader. By this appointment, he resigned his position at the State House of Assembly. By virtue of the law, a by-election was to be conducted in our constituency to fill in the vacant seat left by the outgone member. 

It was on this backdrop that some of us began politicking and campaigning as far back as 2017. The rumors were that the by-election would be conducted in December of 2017 or January of 2018. 

It was never conducted. 

For one day, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi never called the aspirants to any meeting to intimate of his desires and intentions pertaining the vacant seat. He left everyone to continue with their campaign, thus wasting money. 

HE WHO GOES TO EQUITY MUST GO WITH A CLEAN HAND. 

When it comes to Awgu North, my community, Owelli has never held any elective position since the inception of Democracy in Nigeria. We have never even held the position of a mere Commissioner. And going by then unwritten rule of the sharing formula between the two clans that make up Awgu North, popular known as Mbanabo, equity, justice and fairness dictated that the House of Assembly be zoned to Ntegbe clan. From this, they further dictated that it be micro zoned to my community. It was this premise that necessitated 14 good people to purchase the forms from my community. 1.1 million naira multiplied by 14, was the total amount my community DIRECTLY remitted to the coffers of Enugu PDP. We have not factored in all the money spent in campaign, politicking and declaration. Every logic, the gods of fairness, equity and justice passed an unanimous judgment that this position, that this seat be zoned to Ntegbe clan and down to my community.

I will not bore us with the political intrigues that happened. I was there. Saw it all. But at the end of the day, on the day we were supposed to conduct the primary election, we were called into the office of then Local Government Chairman and were told that the governor has directed that we all step down for Mrs Jane Eneh. Mrs Jane Eneh is from Udi, married to an Agbudu man. Agbudu is not part of Ntegbe clan. So, tell me, where was the justice, fairness and equity? 

To add salt to the injury, all the aspirants from across the state were later called to the government house, were asked by the governor himself to put down our names for appointments. We did. After that meeting, each person was given the sum of 100,00 naira. That was it. That was the end. No appointment whatsoever ever came. No compensation was given. My community was short-changed, raped and discarded. So I ask, where is the justice, fairness and equity? 

It is on this backdrop that I view anyone who goes about saying that there is zoning in Enugu state as a soulless and vile person.

Where does zoning start from? Where does it end? On what basis are you saying there is zoning? Is zoning only limited to the governorship? What about the senate, house of reps, house of assembly and chairmanship? 

The tale of what happened in Awgu Local Government in the just concluded Chairmanship tussle is a tale for another day. 

But the take home from all these is that, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, before God and man, is the last person on earth who should talk about zoning. On what moral ground will he stand to talk about zoning, when he has used his own hands to rubbish all the unwritten zoning arrangements in the various local government areas of the state? 

This is why the praise singers of the governor, up till now, cannot convincingly tell you how, when and where zoning is practiced in the entire Enugu state. They know the truth. But they must defend their salaries, even if it means telling unconvincing lies. And this my brothers and sisters, is the hypocrisy of the praise singers of Governor Ugwuanyi.
