We are all living witnesses to the criminal neglect and decay in standard and values of educational institutions in this country. No nation gets out of the ditch

the way we are going about it. We must retrace our steps fastly or be prepared to see the worst come. Public schools have become disaster frontlines and intellectual cemeteries. In a backward country like Nigeria, which has become a profound failure of imagination, education is ought to be a priority of the government, but for those who want to spearhead the organized destruction of the affairs of the rest of us, whose interests are best served and protected in a state of anomie, it is nothing to worry about and should be overlooked.

Academic activities are in rapid retreats, this is happening in a midst of severe shortages and chronic neglects, and education like the naira, is in free fall. If we fail to do something to rescue education from ruins, we cannot rescue anything, not the economy, not democracy, not development, not our values, not even ourselves or dignity as human persons.

Federal Government and ASUU have by and large demonstrated that education has no relevance in Nigeria any more by making the system so harsh and turbulent for students to concentrate and study. Students who are always at the receiving end of the f!ghts are being pushed to the point that can rightly be described as being beyond human. And when they want to vent their anger and frustration, they may not differentiate between those who are responsible for their woes and the rest of us.

We have a crop of people in government whose overall interest obviously appears, is chiefly to serve and protect its th!eving members and hooligans at the detriments of the whole populace whom in their dehumanzing pursuit for power and affluence, are squandering the standard of education through non-payment of salaries and criminal neglect of infrastructural revitalizations.

In the book of Matt. 10:10 the Bible made it clear that a labourer deserves his wages. All over the world that is the way it is. People get their wages after they have worked to earn them. Their survival from the ravages of poverty, hunger and dieases depend on the wages. That is why God frowned bitterly in the book of Leviticus 19:13 at people who withhold others wages. Developed nations do not delay payment of salaries. And whenever it comes to non-payment of salaries as and when due, teachers have always remained the worst victims of this crime.

Today, we are all swimming and squirming in the pool of the moral stupor that the constant scuffles between ASUU and FG. left behind its trail. The greater problem is, however, that most people who should raise alarm over the current moribund and deplorable situations are doing nothing about it. Since those we chose to speak for us at various levels have failed us, have the rest of Nigerians any reason to be silent as education and the future of the youths is under attack?

When a percentage of youths were dropping out of school in America in 1983, the country's Commission on Excellence described America as "a nation at risk". What is happening in Nigeria educational institutions today is akin to what happened then in America. Nigeria is a nation at risk.

"Nigeria is a nation at risk because FG and ASUU have forced everybody out of school and so fighting hard to destroy the values of education"

Nigeria is a nation at risk because FG and ASUU have forced everybody out of school and so fighting hard to destroy the values of education. Nigeria is a nation at risk because ASUU and FG are toiling with the future of the youths and condemning them to live in the dark side of the society. Nigeria is a nation at risk because the youths are being frustrated and suffocated for no reason knowing fully well that a frustrated youth is a potential threat to the society. Nigeria is a nation at risk because those whose voice could be heard and heeded are silent over the overbearing mettle of our leaders. Nigeria is a nation at risk because the government is laying a totem for avoidable future tsunami.

We are faceing a grim dilemma in this country. Our leaders at all levels are making travesty of our collective future and development. Serious national concerns are treated with cold fists. It was James Olmos who said that education is the vaccine of violence. Now that government has put education which is the vaccine of violence on trial, what then becomes the future of tomorrow? It is grating on the mind
