By, Ezeh Echezona E.(C.E.O) and Nwuko Alex O.

May we meet you?
Pastor: I am pastor Odoh Steven, final year student from  department of arts education(Religion).

What influence your decision to study Education Religion?
Pastor: Primarily, I came for education because I know the area of my calling affecting the society and that is, in terms of human development and merging it with religion as with my vocation as a pastor. It will also avail me the opportunity of being exposed more, because all we study here is not only Christianity, but we study other world religion. So I have a balanced knowledge of Christianity more than the four walls of the church could allow me. So I came Primarily for education, I needed to merge it with something that has to do with my vocation. That’s what has influenced my education/religion as a course of study.

Are you an ordained Pastor or have the name as an alias?
Pastor: Yes, I was ordained in the Anglican church. I am serving presently in charge of holy trinity Anglican church Uwani in Nsukka. This is my ninth(9th) year in the ministry. I started in the year 2008. I have witnessed up to five transfer . So the title Pastor is not a nickname as people might think. I am fully a pastor of the Anglican church.

From your ministration transfer so far, would it be right to say you are from Nsukka?
Pastor: cultural wise, Yes! But not Nsukka L.G.A precisely. I am a native of Eha-amufu L.GA . it is counted as part of Nsukka cultural zone but not nsukka as a local government.

What does a typical university day in the life of Pastor Steve Odoh foster?
Pastor: (smiling) A lot my brother! A whole lot. I see this environment as a mission field, a very serious one. The funny thing is that when I came here in the first year, I never knew I was going to be a president. In fact, in the beginning of my second year, I didn’t even know. I came here as a second mission field in addition to my church of service, because I know once a missionary is always a missionary. I came here to touch lives, never knew I was going to take in this level of politics. A usual day for me here is , the much am able to make someone life better , yes! That’s what it fosters for me.

How does studying religion helped you in your role as the faculty president?
Pastor: a lot I must confess, “Man without morality, is nothing less than a beast” and one of the things inculcated in the study of religion, is the attribute of morality. Again, the study of religion has put in me the Ecumenical spirit. It might surprise you to know, that my Financial Secretary here and my closest ally in my executive is a Core Muslim but most student don’t know, why? Because we relate so well, there is no bias that he is from another religion and that he is not from my own religion. So I have this openness. Just a week ago(9th July) the catholic students of this faculty had their send forth for their final year students, I was there till the end of the occasion when the staff adviser left. When the M.C was addressing the people, he Said “all of us here that are catholic hardly come for fellowship, but the ESA president on some Sundays after his own church service do come here and join us in fellowship and some won’t believe , he is  even not one of us”. So this ecumenical spirit in me has opened my eye  that there is need to carry everyone along, not being biased based on religion.

According to  Aristotle ‘man is a political animal' we all want to know if you  actually lobbied   your way out or you were nominated for this post?
Pastor: during my first year, I became the course rep of my unit. Even as a busy man then, pastoring a church and studying a course here full time on a regular basis. During my second year, I became the faculty course rep, coordinating all the faculty courses then from the cradle. I got involved in students leadership, but may be not in an elected office. Naturally, I was just flowing. I have no political ambition in mind. But one thing was Happening, a certain dissatisfaction was brewing in me, and that was how the government of ESA was going on, I discover vividly when I came in first year, that the kind of reception we got, one of it which I vowed to correct, was when I came in, we paid for our T-shirt, I was one of those who was denied the shirt. I didn’t find it funny. I saw many things that dissatisfied me and that glowed my passion. We do under the mango tree, analyze the government in power then. During the  next Election, I vied for Sec. General and came out or won unopposed. But the office of the Secretary General was just a steeping stone, it was an opportunity for me to gain access, to know how things are done and have a balance advantage. And this was how it all started. In my first year, I never I was going to be a president. They say ” necessity is the mother of invention”. I can attribute this feat to two factors that is , One, God's factor and Two, The Passion .

What do you think is the biggest misconception about the role of faculty president ?
Pastor: I think that is the financial aggrandizement that goes with the office especially for people with dubious mindset. People with this mindset, you don’t blame them, because they conceived it out of what has been playing out over the years. Somebody will get info an office , will amass wealth  and will not be able to make students  life better. So people has come to the conclusion, that whenever faculty president is mentioned, it is all about money. Let the truth be told, we came here to correct some things and let me shock you, as we speak, I have less than N2000 in my account, I don’t own two account, I have only one, if you need verification you can go there and check out. Am not ashamed to say that , am not a rich president, I might not be rich in cash but am rich in investment. I have invested in peoples life, I have touched lives, even if tomorrow if they have opportunity to pay back, it will be better than that thing I think I can grab as a president. In fact, I was telling somebody before I became president, the bike(motorcycle)  I was driving was very new, but now it has grown older because it lacks maintenance, not because I don’t want to , but because I have to live within my means. So the misconception is not really a misconception but an impression that has been given to people over the years.

What are your challenges as the EDUCATION STUDENTS ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT:
Pastor: So many(twice), the number one challenge I have is the fear of not being the best, it is my major motivating favor. The challenge of making sure I do the best, it gives me late night, it gives me sleepless night, it does a lot of thing; it takes my money, it take my time. Secondly, owing to the fact, that I came into office when the Economy of the country is not wonderful. It has not been easy for students to come on with their financial entitlement to the association. So I will say , my administration didn’t realize as much as was realized before because of the economy. Many people are barely managing to feed and to cater for themselves, so fund is another thing. There are Many things I will want to do, but then we are limited by funds. Another one is Availability of time, you know I am also a student, I have to study for my exams. I am proud to say that by grace of God, that I have not failed any course in these university. The beat score or grade I have ever gotten is a ‘D’ and that was when I was hospitalized, I was admitted to the hospital. So I wouldn’t so much emphasize on challenges because the grace of God has been so much available for us. That is just the thing.

How do you balance your course commitments and the responsibilities of Faculty president?
Pastor: That’s just part A., part B , remember that I am still a full time pastor with a church, I don’t have an assistant for now. Eeem!, we have the same 24hrs, that’s what everyone has. But, base on management that time 24hrs, is shorter for some people and longer for some people. And one Man that doesn’t sleep early is Pastor Steve. Let me just say that I work hard, am not Lazy, I value every minute. If you have been watching my move, you will see that am always in a hurry. I walk fast, drive  fast and talk fast things are partioned to time. I am a punctual human being. It is one of the thing that has helped me. It is all about management. Sometime ago, I had a female friend, we were really great friend, but ban you imagine what caused problem for us ? (NO) , she said “pastor, you don’t have time for your friends” (Laughs) that was wow!. It wasn’t as if I was treating her bad, but she had observed me. ‘ why don’t you have time for your friends? , you don’t visit your friends, Any time I call I am in the office, I am in this meeting, am doing this am doing the other.’ That’s just that, so, I have just to sacrifice my own Convenience , I made away with frivolities and just, I have always stick to business. Some people say “I am a very serious human being” its just a way of maximizing the equal time that everyone has. So that’s, that.

.
We have seen may faculties conduct their election, you are coming to the end of your tenure as president of ESA. How has the Faculty changed and developed since you became the president?
Pastor: ok! That’s a big question and it’s a question I don’t always like answering. I actually believe in people seeing thing for themselves, but its necessary I answer. When I was campaigning, there is something I kept saying, which is that ESA needs a father, ESA needs a leader and not just a politician. Because I see politics as a means of getting into power. When you get into power, you don’t just keep saying politics, you already the president. Lead the people, give them quality leadership. I think I am one of the most available president in the history of ESA, when I mean available to human beings, available to students, available to their personal problems. God uses us to solve it. That Father figure, you know,  that’s what one of the students call me, even this morning he called me that. Secondly, the image of ESA has improved within the university community. We are behind, so so far behind in the community of other faculties over the years. You hardly hear that something was done , a competition of any kind and ESA came anything close to third. Students are not even interested, you know , we have people who can do it but the interest to come out to represent has not been there. But by the grace of God, in our administration, it is a team work, we came into office. The university knows that that there is faculty of education. We won the maiden edition of the Vice chancellor’s Cup keenly contested by fifteen (15) Faculties of both Nsukka and Enugu campus. Before now you only hear of faculty of engineering and social science in sports competition but we break out.
This semester again, they came out with inter- faculty cup. We (ESA) won. Right now in the committee of faculties, ESA has come to the  led light. I am believing God that whoever will succeed me will be able to sustain all thus. Also in the area of sport, we were able to float the Maiden edition of inters departmental female football competition. During the competition, I was tempted to pick a Female girlfriend (laughs). I don’t know Education have this crop of talent. One of them really won my heart. That girl that won the best female footballer of the year from science Education. My dear, I was amazed at what I saw. So we needed to give people the opportunity to showcase what they have, because nobody knows tomorrow. It is only in education that we play female inter- department  competition. There are many things to say, we cannot stop talking, infrastructure is another one, I would prefer people do the talking.

From a student point of view, what  has been the most difficult part of the job?
Pastor: the most difficult part of it(laughs), I will still take you back to that time factor. You know UNN is not just like any other School. UNN is where a lecturer doesn’t know who you are, he wants you to deliver what is expected of you. Here, time is a very serious factor. So, time has really given us limitations. It is only in University of Nigeria Nsukka, that a lecturer will tell you that clashing of lecture is part of campus game( laughs)!  Interviewer: from my research’s, permit me to call you the ‘man of the people'. Pastor: Wow (Twice) Am humbled.

What quotes , words and speech keeps you going?
Pastor: my dear they are Many, many quote. The most popular during my campaign then was  “ he who started cooking before another, can boast of many broken pots” , talking about Experience. I didn’t come into office to learn how to lead, I have been a leader for years, I have managed monies because as a pastor you manage finance. So the quote keeps me going, yes “ he that started cooking before another, can boast of many broken pots”

What lies ahead for the next Education Students Association President?
Pastor: a lot oh! (Twice), first is sustaining the legacy we laid, I brought back the legislative arm of this ESA, and instituted the Judiciary as well. Before now, a president will come on seat and will not want to be checkmated, so they will not allow the house of reps to function. So when I came in, I instituted them, I equipped them , if you can look here, this is the speaker’s Gown, that is his wig, the mace, all this we bought it in our administration, even the gavel and many other things. They submitted the budget too, and we financed it, they got their allowances and they bought the things they need to work with. The judiciary too, I instituted them, they brought in their budget and we finances it. So there is a legacy we laid and that legacy is for people to know what a proper government ought to be. Recently , one of the Executive was suspended, before now you don’t hear of such, why? Because the house of reps have never been in place . it was disbanded by the president that came on seat in 2009. He was the one that disbanded the legislative arm, and since after that, the subsequent government always tie the same path. But when I came in , I said how, if I do something wrong, let them checkmate me, it would put me on my toes, so that I will do the right thing. So the incoming president, I am sorry that I have made things  difficult for him, if he does not have the heart and mind for selflessness, because when you come in here, you will see the money, but you are not free to take it.
the Speaker wig
How?

Pastor: there are three signatories to the account, the president (Chief signatory), the Financial Secretary and treasurer, but two of them cannot withdraw without me. There is something in politics, you can always lobby,  lobby the signatories and Mae some withdraw for yourself, but with the house of representative, The house will have to approve the budget and the budget determines the withdrawal you make.
So the president , am sorry in Proxy, I have made things this way for you. So at least, I want him to sustain the legacy of a proper government and an accountable government, a selfless govt. Am leaving office today , without so much money, but I am leaving today with joy that people lives have been touched. Again, I have renovated this office, before now thus has not been like an office. In fact among other faculty offices, this was among the worst. So when I came into office, I said NO, I cannot work here so we went into renovation. Here was painted, we have new curtains, I have to put iron doors. It cost us over forty thousand Naira (N40,000], because had to go for a string door because what we meet here was a very old wooden door that was fixed in 1997.
In fact, I have this memory to relate; last administration I was the Secretary General, I have access to this office, I had the keys. On 2nd January while traveling to my village, I passed through this place to pick somethings and left. On the following day, I came here, I left the village very early around 6am. So I get here before 8am, lo and behold! The door was pulled down, the door was broken! I was shocked(twice). I Ed my president, he is from anambra, he traveled for the yuletide. ( A din {Loud noise}  and bang was heard,  the ceiling fan with the inscription ‘Exco 2009/2010’ fiercely felled down, shattering the laptops , phone, power bank, books ,recorder and every gadget on the president table without injuring and or harming anyone (Three people in the office) at exactly 3:33pm)

Pastor Steve: Glory be To God, nobody is Harmed that is the hand of God(Laughing) ESA is in the hands of God! This fan was installed in 2009, it needs a change, so he(Incoming president) can start from here. May be he can start from here, so that’s that.
